How to Make Homemade German Chocolate Cake

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

  • 1 package (4 ounces) sweet baking chocolate
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs (separated)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ⅓ cups sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the chocolate with water over low heat, stirring until smooth. Set it aside to cool.
  3. In a bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each. Stir in the melted chocolate and vanilla.
  5. Add the flour mixture to the chocolate mixture, alternately with buttermilk. Mix until smooth.
  6. In a clean bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gently fold them into the batter.
  7. Pour the batter evenly into the pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, mix evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thick, about 12 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, coconut, and pecans.
  9. Spread the frosting between the cake layers and on top. Leave the sides of the cake plain or frost if desired.
